Below are a list of the meaning of the information given above:

Race variables:

Track: The track of which the race is being run.

No: The race number

Time: The starting time of the race

Date: the date of the race

Dist: the distance of the race (metres)

Class: the class value of the race.

Prize: The prize pool for the race

CVal: Our estimated value for the quality of the race.

Horse variables:

Form: the recent form of the horse. 1 indicates is finished first, 2 indicates it finished 2nd etc. 0 indicates a finish of tenth of lower whilst X indicates a spell (a time off that the horse hasn’t raced)

DLS: Days since last start, ie how many days it has been since the horse last raced.

No: The number of the horse

Name: The horses name

BP: Barrier Position at the start

Ag: Age of the horse

S: Sex of the horse

Wght: The weight that the horse is carrying

Jockey: The rider of the horse

Trainer: The trainer of the horse

Win%: the win% over the horses career.

Plc%: the place % over the horses career

ThisDist: The number of races at this distance, followed by the number of time the horse finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

ThisTrak: The number of races at this race track, followed by the number of time the horse finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

CValC: CValue Change. Indicates the estimated level of the race as compared to it’s last race. For example a horse with -3.5 indicates that it is currently running in a race 3.5 “CVal”’s easier than it’s last race. A horse with a positive value here indicates that it has stepped up and is running in a harder race as compared to it’s last.

WgtC: Weight Change. Indicates the difference in weight carried as compared to it’s last race. For example a horse with -3.5 indicates that it is currently running in a race 3.5 kgs less than it’s previous race.

Dist: Indicates the change in distance that the horse is running as compared to it’s last race. For example, a horse with 200 indicates that it is currently running 200 metres longer than it’s last race.

Total: Indicates the rating of the horse in this particular race.

Price:  The “take price” of the horse which is calculated via a computer simulation of the horses ratings

Win1000: The Amount the bet on the horse. The amount if calculated as Win1000 = 1000 / Price.

What does it all mean?

The main information that you require is the variable Price. This is the rating of that particular horse. The prices of all the horses are set to a market of 90%, so in other words there is already a 10% overlay on that horse. In other words, the variable Price is the take price.

When betting compare the prices as suggested by Sportpunter to the odds that are being offered. If the price suggested by Sportpunter is less than that offered then bet on that horse. In the above example we rated GRANDLY with a price of $2.10. He was being offered $17.50 at a bookmaker. This suggests a good betting option. In the same race, SEA SCOPE was paying $4.20 which is below the rated price of $5.30 so it would be wise not to bet on this horse.

When working out the amount to put on it, the variables Win1000 is used. The amount to bet is given by this variable which is the same as 1000 divided by the Price. Naturally some people may wish to bet more or less than this amount. If so calculate Win500 by having the amount, Win250 by dividing the amount by 4 etc. Of course remember do not bet on horses where the odds are less that those as Sportpunter have rated.

Of course it is not advantageous if you bet on too many horses in any one race. Betting on 4 or 5 horses per race will not see you gain money in the long term. If Sportpunter’s figures suggest that there are overlays (bookies odds are greater than sportpunter’s predictions) on 4 or 5 horses then there are a couple of ways you can deal with this. You can either skip the race, bet on the most likely to win, or perhaps bet on the horses with the greatest overlay (ie greatest difference between bookies odds and sportpunter’s predictions).

As it turned out in the above example GRANDLY won at incredible odds of $17.50, but this is just one of many races. And all these races are shown on the Sportpunter webpage at horseracing.sportpunter.com. There, the results are where the horse is only bet on if it contains a nominated (50%) overlay or more. More information on overlays are shown here.
